Pope Francis Speaks About the Terror Attacks in Paris

Since news of the horror in Paris broke, Pope Francis has been vocal over his sadness and has been distraught.
Speaking during Sunday Mass the Pope condemned the Paris terror attacks, calling it "blasphemy" to use the name of God to justify "violence and hatred."
He went on to express his shock at the sheer "barbarity" of the attacks, telling crowds in St Peter's Square:
We wonder how can it come to the heart of man to conceive and carry out of such horrible events...
...the road of violence and hatred does not resolve humanity's problems. And using the name of God to justify this road is blasphemy.
On Saturday Pope Francis also voiced that there is "no justification for these things".
In a an interview with TV 2000, he said he was "moved and pained" by the events in the French capital.
I am close to the people of France, to the families of the victims, and I am praying for all of them.
These things are hard to understand

TODAY IS THE BEATIFICATION OF OSCAR ROMERO

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:
“When we struggle for human rights, for freedom, for dignity, when we feel that it is a ministry of the church to concern itself for those who are hungry, for those who have no schools, for those who are deprived, we are not departing from God’s promise. He comes to free us from sin, and the church knows that sin’s consequences are all such injustices and abuses. The church knows it is saving the world when it undertakes to speak also of such things.”
― Oscar A. Romero, The Violence of Love

POWERFUL EARTHQUAKE HITS NEPAL

More than 2,000 people have died in a powerful earthquake in Nepal, with many more feared trapped under rubble. CAFOD partners are on the ground helping to rescue those affected.

Prayer for help

Almighty God, in our distress and grief
help us to remember that you love us.
We do not understand why this great disaster
has happened but help us to trust you.

Loving Lord,
for those who have died, give them eternal rest
for those who are bereaved, comfort and console them
for those who are hurt, heal and strengthen them.

Lord God, enable us to help our suffering brothers
and sisters in whatever way we can.

Heavenly Father be with us now and always.
Amen.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS MEDITATION

Yesterday evening we had an evening meditation on the 14 Stations of the Cross. Each station began with a short passage from scripture, followed by reflections on the context of the events, how the people involved in this part of Christ's journey would be feeling, and what parallels there are in our lives and in our world today. The station then finished with a prayer.
The impact was even stronger because of the pictures that were displayed for each station. These fourteen powerful works of art were produced by pupils at the parish secondary school, St Thomas More's, and we thank them and their teacher.
Thanks also to everyone who came and who helped in any way. People commented on how moving and powerful it had been, and the Justice and Peace Group will be looking at how to follow this.

""A man - a woman – who feels sick in the soul, sad, who made many mistakes in life, at a certain time feels that the waters are moving - the Holy Spirit is moving something - or they hear a word or ... 'Ah, I want to go!' ... And they gather up their courage and go. And how many times in Christian communities today will they find closed doors! 'But you cannot, no, you cannot [come in]. You have sinned and you cannot [come in]. If you want to come, come to Mass on Sunday, but that’s it – that’s all you can do.’ So, what the Holy Spirit creates in the hearts of people, those Christians with their ‘doctors of the law’ mentality, destroy ".

CAFOD PRAYER FOR SYRIA

CYCLONE IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC

“We are concerned at the intensity of Cyclone Pam and are awaiting assessments of the damage and impact,” Ms Lalor said. “We are liaising with our Pacific partners, staff and Church networks to monitor the aftermath of the Super Cyclone, assess damage and respond to requests for support should it be needed”.
www.caritas.org

“The church has a valuable role to play in responding to disasters like this one which often impact vulnerable communities the most. That’s why the ongoing work in the region to support communities to reduce the risk to natural disasters such as Cyclone Pam is so important.”

THE POOREST PRESIDENT IN THE WORLD continued

In line with the country's constitution, Uruguay's president Jose “Pepe” Mujica is stepping down after 5 years in office. Described as "the world's poorest president" Mujica chose to live in a modest farm house rather than the presidential palace, gave 90% of his salary to charity, saying he simply didn't need all that money, and drove himself around in a 1987 beetle. He did much to reduce poverty, debt and income inequality in Uruguay, and legalised abortion, same-sex marriage and marijuana. Leaving office he acknowledged the difficulties he faced trying to make positive reforms and said "there's still so much to do" hoping that the next government would be “better than mine and will have greater success." There are so many great quotes from this unique politician we couldn't pick just one, so here are a few and you can read more here: http://www.filmsforaction.org/…/15-powerful-quotes-from-th…/

BIGGEST BANANA SPLIT IN BUXTON!

For the second year running, a group of Buxton and Leek College Hospitality and Catering students made a gigantic Banana Split to mark Fairtrade Fortnight (23rd February – 8th March 2015).  Last year’s Split was ten metres long and made with 100 Fairtrade bananas.  “I was a bit concerned that we wouldn’t be able to find 100 volunteers to eat it,” said Ingrid Keith, Chaplain at Buxton and Leek College, who commissioned it.  “But it disappeared within seconds.  So this year we thought we’d add another two metres and make it twelve metres all together.  The students once again did us proud.”
The Split was brought out into the Dome in six lengths of two-metre guttering and was devoured by staff, students and visitors to the Dome as part of the Chaplaincy’s Fairtrade Day.  There were four public showings of the new film, “Fairtrade Matters” with free Fairtrade tea and chocolate brownies made by MA student Ellie Melissourgaki.  Meanwhile Charles Jolly of the Buxton Fairtrade Town Steering Group ran a Fairtrade Hoopla and Pingpong stall where players could bag prizes such as a Fairtrade pineapple.
The idea was to celebrate the fact that an increasing number of people now recognise the Fairtrade Mark when they shop for products such as tea, coffee, cocoa and bananas.  They understand that  they can enjoy Fairtrade products more, knowing that the people who produced them, sometimes in the poorest parts of the world, are guaranteed a living wage and decent working conditions.
